October On The Homestead

October is one of my favorite months. It starts out warm, and then slowly slides into the coldness of winter. If there was one thing that October was on the homestead…it was creating a new deck out of the half of the old deck we saved. I have written about it, but I can say: it was worth it.

The start of the new deck, on the bones.

Decking in the warm fall sun.

The shorter days kept us working as fast as we could.

Tackling the one set of stairs we kept.

The deck is nearly done, with some pretty amazing steps.

The boys roasting marshmallows.

Fire pit in action, warding off the chilly day.

Harvesting late season beans.

Harvesting herbs, and drying them in paper bags.

Getting garlic and shallots ready to be planted.

Using the bulb dibbler to plant the garlic.

The garlic beds done and awaiting the cover of new hay.

The final maple leaves of the season, turning red.

The raised beds tucked in for winter.

The greenhouse getting shut down for winter.
