Local Adventures: Freeland Park and Beach

Tuesday was a chilly, but slightly sunny day (and no rain), so I took the boys to Freeland Park and Beach, on south Whidbey Island. The park is located just outside of the small town, and is walkable from the grocery store, if one is visiting the island. The park itself has many parking spots, for both cars and oversized trucks. It features beach access, shell finding, and as well a public area for shellfish harvesting (when allowed).

The beach is part of Holmes Harbor, a protected area, ont he East side of the island. The east side faces the mainland and Camano Island, and isn’t overly choppy (and doesn’t have the waves of the open west side beaches). It’s great for looking for shells and sea glass as well.

Clam holes!

Barnacles on a stick was Alistaire’s find of the day. Which he left behind for the returning high tide.

Looking out to Holmes Harbor and the mainland in the far distance.

Saved for last was the huge playground. The boys had tons of fun running around, trying it all out. If one is on the island for the day, this park makes a great leg stretcher for kids. Plenty of picnic tables, and Payless Foods is just up the hill with a great deli to get lunch at.

Parking is free, with large spots, even RV’s can park here.
